For debate The problem with cephalosporins

چکیده
Although widely accepted as broad-spectrum antibiotics, cephalosporins are not active against all the bacteria commonly isolated in a hospital microbiology laboratory. Organisms that are not inhibited by cephalosporin therapy consequently overgrow, with varying potential to cause infection. Some of these are instantly recognizable as pathogens; others, although originally regarded as commensal or of low risk status, have subsequently been shown to cause disease. Furthermore, there is an association between cephalosporin usage and the emergence of multiply-resistant organisms. Microorganisms selected by cephalosporin therapy include commensal organisms such as coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, enterococci and Candida albicans, and organisms of more established pathogenicity, e.g. Clostridium difficile, penicillinresistant pneumococci, multiply-resistant coliforms and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Some of these organisms are constitutively resistant to cephalosporins while others have acquired resistance, usually as part of a multiple resistance package. This review discusses the evidence for a link between cephalosporins and overgrowth of certain microorganisms, including those that are multiply resistant to antibiotics.

Pixel selection by successive projections algorithm method in multivariate image analysis for a QSAR study of antimicrobial activity for cephalosporins and design new cephalosporins
Thirty-one Cephalosporin compounds were modeled using the multivariate image analysis and applied to the quantitative structure activity relationship (MIA-QSAR) approach. The acid dissociation constants (pKa) of cephalosporins play a fundamental role in the mechanism of activity of cephalosporins. The antimicrobial activity of cephalosporins was related to their first pKa by different models. B...

متن کاملThe Manifestation Challenge: The Debate between McDowell and Wright
In this paper, we will discuss what is called “Manifestation Challenge” to semantic realism, which was originally developed by Michael Dummett and has been further refined by Crispin Wright. According to this challenge, semantic realism has to meet the requirement that knowledge of meaning must be publically manifested in linguistic behaviour. In this regard, we will introduce and evaluate John...

The above titled paper examined the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) warning letters and notice of violations (NOV) over a 10-year period. Findings from this content analysis reinforced what has been the primary issue for prescription direct-to-consumer advertising (DTCA) since its beginning, the fair balance of risk and benefit information. As opposed to another analysis in 2026 about th...

To be an entrepreneurial university nowadays seems to be an attractive, convincing, modern vision for many higher education institutions and their leaders. The article goes through reflections on who will say what to whom when using the expression “entrepreneurial university” and it will show that there are at least four debates about entrepreneurial challenges to universities. The first deb...
